...sorry about the boring background, I didn't have time to look for clipart 'n stuff...

Lets just think about this year 2000 stuff for a minute.

Remember when the year '1994' came around..? How we were supposed to have had "Big Brother" watching over us and everything? Geez, it's been SO long since I had to read that book, I don't remember the details... But anyway, while I wouldn't presume to say that everything is hunky-dory as far as personal privacy goes, I think in general it's agreed that we didn't end up with '1994' in 1994.

Now, that has to be considered a Good thing... but here we are looking at another big milestone and we're NOT where we were supposed to be right now. So, fergit all this computer mayhem stuff. Let's talk about about our 'Real' expectations for "The Year 2000".

I mean, weren't we supposed to be flying around with Personal Jet Packs a la 'Rocket Man' by now?

Weren't we supposed to be eating all our meals in Pill form or something?

Weren't cars supposed to be hover crafts with self guidence mechanisms to prevent accidents and drive themselves to their programmed destinations?

Weren't we all supposed to be wearing mylar jumpsuits and living in a commune on the Moon?

You know, I think somebody is behind schedule.

I remember, sometime when I was a kid, projecting how old I'd be in the year 2000... I don't remember how old I was, --Too young to know that 36 isn't old, anyway. But I was sure we'd all be living like the 'Jetsons'; if I wasn't dead of old age. ;-)

So, were we so wrong about how fast things would move? It seems like technology is moving at an incredible pace-- just not fast enough? Or maybe in the wrong directions? Where'd we go off the gant chart?

Could it be that this whole Y2K/programming glitch thing is just a distraction for those mysterious folks that are "behind schedule"?

Can't say I'm sorry about the Mylar jumpsuit idea. (although... didn't they come into fashion briefly in the '80s?) Instead the latest 'fashion' seems to be paying a whole lotta money for the least possible amount of fabric.

How far are we from a commune on the Moon? Personally, I suspect most of the technology is there, but it's not cost effective for just living there... Is it truly Practical to want to live on the moon right now, anyway? What can be produced on the moon cheaper than we can make it here that we need in quantity at this time?

I think some people do eat vitamin pills as a days' menu, but I believe they're considered ill. Actually, I'd hate to see 'real food' go away, but those "Replicator" things they have in Star Trek are definitely Cool. We Got to get us some of Those!

I understood at one time that someone's made a hover craft; but it's either not practical yet or the big car company bought them out... but that's a rumor, right? and Can you imagine traffic jams in the air instead of the ground? Regardless, I think I'd prefer the hover craft to the jet pack, anyway... looks waaaay too easy to toast your tushie in one of those Robot Man gadgets.

I Do think we should've been able to solve world hunger by now, or at least achieved World Peace... Maybe we've been working too much on totally kickin' special effects movies or something, when we should have spent more time on that stuff...

Maybe, in the year 2000, we might realize how far we're behind schedule on this important stuff and start working together towards the future we expected. I think World Peace and ending World hunger should be top of the list.

Then, let's start on that Replicator thingie. :-)
