| Call me Ami (pronounced "AH-me"). Or rather, don't--it's Alex' way of saying Auntie, and I think I'd rather keep it her special nickname for me. I've always wanted a nickname...funny how now at age 35 I finally have not one, but two. |
| I got to spend a lot of time with Alex over the holidays. A couple of weeks before Christmas, my sister and Alex came over while my grandfather (remember Pop-Pop?) was in town. They came over again for Christmas, and Wayne and I visited them over New Year's. Now, whenever her parents are making her do something she objects to (horrors such as changing her diaper), she calls out a hope-filled, "AmiAmiAmiAmi!" for me to come rescue her. Not that I did much rescuing while I was there, really, but I tag along and try to entertain her during the traumatic activity. Her (other) favorite words include the all-purpose "Up!," "apple," and an awe-filled "Ohhh...," used for a surprising variety of scenarios like, "Ohhhh, my favorite toys are still here after my nap!" | |

Remember Nolan? He's starting to get more fun to spend time with now. He crawls up a storm, and pulls himself up on anything close to stationary. He looks a lot like Wayne's dad and brother. I'm starting back to school this week. I've got a fairly light load this quarter--seven units--but I expect I won't be reveling in lots of free time all the same. I'm taking Irrigation Design (part two of the irrigation series), Landscape Design: Graphics (first of two classes in landscape design), Pruning (a 4 week cours just this month), and OH 86. OH 86 is going to be primarily time to work on the Foothill exhibit for the San Francisco Garden Show. The Garden Show is a BIG deal around here among the diggerati, and this is the first year Foothill has had a full size garden space to design and build. A garden at a garden show is really more like a stage set than a real landscape. Last quarter I worked on constructing walls to surround the garden--meant to simulate concrete, they were made from 2x2s covered with sheets of insulation foam. They'll be painted bright ultramarine blue, so if you come to the Garden Show in March, look for the garden with blue walls. The other OH 86 project I'll be working on is the Foothill Firehouse project I started last summer. The basic plant design is done, and Wayne has volunteered to lead development of working drawings so the fire district can put the design out to bid. I'll be doing most or all of the CAD work (and thus learn more of AutoCAD) and another student will be working on the non-CAD parts (Wayne has time to teach me CAD, but can't teach her as well). I can't wait to see the completed project! "Ami" Cheryl | ||
