OK, today we're going to talk about LUCK.

Do you believe in Luck?

What IS luck, anyway? Metaphysical? Mental? Emotional? Religious?

Let's say there IS no 'luck'.... Then everything, say with lotteries, sweepstakes, doorprizes, etc; would be a straight, random shot, right? 1 chance out of the total number of entries, correct? Same for everyone.

Well, then how come some people seem to win ALL the time, and some people NONE of the time? an example: my sister claims that anytime there's a drawing my nephew enters, he wins something. (naturally this drives my very-competitive niece crazy) He doesn't 'stuff' the box; but if there's a prize to be drawn for, he almost always gets one. (I can't wait for this kid to hit legal age so I can have him buy me lottery tickets)

Second example... In Beta Sigma Phi, we have two conventions every year... an Area convention, and a State Convention. These are of course popular venues for fund raising and the most popular way to do it seems to be creating 'prize baskets' and raffling them off. At the last area convention, and, I understand, at this last state convention-- the SAME WOMAN won like 12 prize baskets!!! I mean it was unreal; she must've won over 35% of the total prizes by herself. Now, MAYbe she stuffed the boxes; bought lots of chances-- in which case the woman needs a hobby and the answer is obvious-- but she didn't do that at our raffle, anyway; and no one seemed to be mumbling about that... She just seemed to be considered ....Lucky.

I won one basket I went for; and not the one I bought the most chances for, either. Another woman in our chapter also won something. I don't really consider myself to have extraordinary luck; anything I've won can be pretty easily attributed to that random shot thing. There's two women in our chapter, though; that claim to have never won anything at a convention, no matter how hard they try or how many chances they buy; and as far as I can tell, they're right.

So, say there is such a thing as "Luck". What is it, exactly? Is it one of those 'traits' we're supposed to get along with our astrology sign? You either got it or you don't? Or can you "Make your own luck", as people often say? I think it's obvious that if you enter a Lot of contests, you're more likely to win than if you enter none, (duh!) Yet it seems like more than that. Could it be that 'power of positive thinking' thing? Then it would become a kind of a "force of Will", wouldn't it? If you BELIEVE you have luck, then you Do! Or maybe it's 'religious'? "God is on MY side tonight!" yeah, right.

I know a person that appears to be addicted to gambling... This is all my personal opinion, but it seems like for this person at least, the reason they can't stop is that they can't seem to understand that gambling is not something that you can just 'try harder' at... I mean, if you "Try Hard Enough" at anything in this country, you "succeed", right? But not with Gambling-- you can 'gamble smart', know when to get out and cut any losses, play the smart odds-- but if you just Keep At It, your efforts aren't going to "change your luck".

I've been considering this a lot lately... maybe because I'm trying to avoid the Job Hunting I need to do. ;-) There's the "Lucky Duck" type person that always seems to find the perfect job/opportunity they need just when they need it... I do believe you can 'Make' that kind of "luck" with lotsa hard work-- (eeyew...) And then there's the superstitious kind of 'Luck' that involves four leaf clovers, lucky socks or other personal charms... dunno what I think about that... but it's never worked for me, that's for sure.

So, what do YOU think about "Luck"? Got any personal experiences to share? I'd really be curious to hear.

Hugz, y'all. And wish me 'luck' on my job hunting. :)
