I've had music on the brain lately. Among other things.
A school friend was surprised that I like Rush. "But you drive a Saturn!" he exclaimed. What in the world does the car I drive have to do with the music I like? And what are Saturn drivers "supposed" to listen to anyway? Whatever.
I just made a mix tape. I'm a stickler for recording levels so it's a long process that I don't go through often. Good thing for 10 at 10 tapes, or I'd be stuck with the radio all the time. Anyway, this particular mix tape may end up proving too hazardous to my hearing to listen to, but in the mean time it's lots of fun. It's a collection of songs which, when I hear them, I've got to turn up the volume. I'm calling it my "This One Goes To 11" tape. I've been listening to it while driving to and from school and work, and I'm afraid it's also turning me into a more aggressive driver. So if you see a white Saturn station wagon with a maniac at the wheel careening down I-280, uh, well, that would be me. One of the Saturn-driving maniacs, at least.
So if you were to make a mix tape of songs you just GOTTA turn up, what would be on it? Here's mine:
- Dreamline :: Rush
When we are young
Wandering the face of the earth
Wondering what our dreams might be worth
Learning that we're only immortal --
For a limited time
- Rev It Up :: Jerry Harrison
Got the heat turned on
And the windows down
She's hell on wheels
Tellin' everyone how good it feels
- Go Bang :: Shriekback
Everybody got their Black & Decker: blood and fettucine everywhere
- Pump It Up :: Elvis Costello
She said that's that. I don't wanna chitter-chat. Turn it down a little bit or turn it down flat.
- Walking On The Sun :: Smashmouth
So don't delay: act now--supplies are running out! Allow, if you're still alive, 6 to 8 years to arrive.
- Birth-day :: Suzanne Vega
Shake all over like an old sick dog
There's a needle here needle there tremble in the fog
It's a tight squeeze vice grip ice and fire
She's a hot little treasure and the wave goes higher
Birth-day
- Middle of the Road :: The Pretenders
Don't harass me can't you tell I'm going home I'm tired as hell I'm not the kind I used to be I've got a kid I'm thirty three
- Dog Years :: Rush
Seems to me, as we make our own few circles 'round the sun
We get it backwards, and our seven years go by as one
- Working In The Coalmine :: DEVO
Lord. I am so tired. How long can this go on?
- Hyperactive :: Thomas Dolby
I can reach into your homes
Like an itch in your headphones
You can't turn it up
- Give Me Love, Give Me Life :: Roger Hodgson
I may not love you but I can't stop thinking about you
- Theme from Peter Gunn :: Art of Noise with Duane Eddy Orchestra
dooo-dit-dit doooo-dit-dit doooo-dit-dit doooo-dit-dit
- Red Barchetta :: Rush
At the one lane bridge I leave the giants stranded at the riverside
- Freeze-Frame :: J. Geils Band
Zoom lens feeling just won't disappear (doodle-oodle-oot!)
- Would I Lie To You? :: Eurythmics
I've packed my bags
I've cleaned the floor.
Watch me walkin'.
Walkin' out the door.
- Oh Yeah :: Yello
Ohhhhhh, yeahhhhh
- Antmusic :: Adam Ant
so unplug the jukebox
and do us all a favour
that music's lost its taste
so try another flavour -
"antmusic"
- Jerusalem :: Sinead O'Connor
I want to see you
And you're saying you're busy
I want to stop it
And you said it would be easy
It sure takes time
- Head Like A Hole :: Nine Inch Nails
head like a hole . black as your soul . i'd rather die than give you control
- Last Plane Out :: Toy Matinee
So we've kept the good old vices
And laboured to invent a few
With cake in vulgar surplus
We can have it and eat it, too
- Sugar And Stress :: English Beat
We know where our hearts are--right behind our wallets. Yes, and that's where they're staying.
- Got The Time :: Joe Jackson
No such day as tomorrow, only one two three go!
As Ian Shoales would say,
I gotta go--
Cheryl
