This is where I learned I love planing wood. Each rib on the roof has to be cut into a rough approximation of the final shape on the band saw, then planed and sanded down to a perfect curve. The ribs are 1x8's, cut and rejoined into rough arches, which are cut into the arcs shown. The "student" leading this part of the project is a long time shop teacher, so he really knows his tools and what he's doing. He's also great at encouraging me to try things even when I'm unsure of my abilities. Once the ribs are glued to the plywood roof, the whole thing is primed and painted bright red. Soon we'll attach rusted perforated metal sheets to the top of each rib, which will tone down the red a bit. I hope...it's REALLY red! |
