![]() | The south end of the back yard contains a small mortared flagstone patio that acts as a landing for two sliding glass doors as well as an area for a portable barbeque to reside. From the patio, one can see paths disappearing into the foliage, but can't see where they end. Plantings below the oaks do not need summer water and are not within ten feet of any oak trunks. Most of the plants produce attractive white or yellow flowers, which will brighten up the shade produced by the oaks. The plants are all low enough that an attractive view from the client's kitchen window is preserved and enhanced. The creek bank itself has been left alone; I'm leary of doing much excavation there and causing erosion in winter. The slope is stable as it is and I'd rather not disturb it. Hidden behind the airy screen of heavenly bamboo at the foot of an oak, a park bench is angled so that it looks down the creek. |

In the distance, you can see an open gazebo-like structure. Against the far wall, a purple smoke tree catches your eye. I recommend that the client choose plants in small containers--1 gallon or smaller--and plant in the fall so that the winter rains will help establish the plants with a minimum of disturbance to the oak roots. | ![]() |
