My official apologies for the break in my travelogue to Australia, but this will have to be a quickie.

I don't think I mentioned it, but my aunt in Houston was diagnosed with lung cancer about a year ago. She had been taking chemo, but it doesn't seem to have had any effect and the cancer has now spread to her brain.

She and I have always been close and she was the one that took care of me while I was in Houston with xebra.

Now it seems that I am the official disseminator of information. I get the reports from Houston and then spend hours on the phone regurgitating it all.

Basically this is it: She went to the hospital by ambulance about a week and a half ago. That's when they found out it had spread to her brain. She has gone downhill from there. Now she cannot speak or write. None of us think she will ever leave the hospital, even to a skilled nursing facility.

My mom (her sister) is down there with her now and my sister and I are going this weekend. My aunt does have a daughter, my cousin, in Houston, but my poor cousin has a full-time job, two kids and her invalid father lives with her. I won't even mention the the insane, child/wife-beating ex-husband. Now throw this into the mix and I'm not sure how she maintains.

Selfishly I hope my aunt is still alive when I get there Friday. The only thing is it doesn't look like she has much quality of life left.

Shrug and hugs to all,
