Under normal circumstances, Mark David's actions would be direct and to the point - he would enter the car, he would start the car, he would aim the car in the intended direction, and he would drive away in the intended direction. But this was different. He unlocked the passenger side door for Katie, then got into the driver's side of the car and just sat for a moment. Just sat. Katie was used to Mark David taking on a focused look on his face, but this was more pensive, as if there was more reflection going on than the cold calculation that was his norm. "Was this what we were here to see?" he asked Katie. "Well, it took some turns that I could not have anticipated. In a sense, it may have made it even more human, though." He paused in thought a while longer. He slipped a Chopin CD into the car audio system - a welcome break, as the quiet was becoming deafening to Katie. What she couldn't see was that it seemed to relax his mental processes that much more, as well - Chopin always did that for him, especially a good Polonaise. After some time, he asked, "When is the funeral itself being held?" "Let me check," she answered. She leafed through her notes and said "Tomorrow at 9:00 in the morning. Why?" "Do you have anything scheduled?" "No, why?" she answered, with a feeling of what's about to come already in her mind. Mark David pulled his mobile phone out and dialed a number. He then said, "Hello, this is Mr. Addisen. Do I have anything of urgency on my schedule tomorrow?...That's a meeting that can be moved - move it to another day...I said move it to another day...Yes, clear my schedule for the day - I will not be in for the day. Thank you. Good bye." He closed the phone and put it away. "We are going to Sylvia's funeral tomorrow." "What brings you to this decision?" Katie asked. "Proper respects have not yet been paid. I wish to pay them." |
