Counting Lives
April 25, 2003

After selecting a coffeemaker - a Krups, to Jennifarre's specifications - Katie and Jennifarre returned to their apartment. The time was already late and both of them needed to wake up early the next day. Jennifarre, neverminding her jokes about maintaining a low level of blood in her caffeine stream, had already had her last cup of coffee for the night, and Katie was getting ready for bed, as well. She walked into the living room and noticed that the light on the Caller ID box was lit, indicating that at least one person had called while they were gone. She started scrolling through the calls that had been stored in the box:

"Hey, Jennifarre," Katie called, "I think one of your friends up in Madison called. Besides that, it looks like three telemarketers, unless you've been avoiding bill collectors. Do you want to pick up the messages now, or wait until later?"

"Sure. I'll get them from here," Jennifarre replied from her room. She picked up her phone and dialed the number for voice mail and found that two of the callers had hung up without leaving a message, one of them was a telemarketer that tried to sell her a "four-day, three-night trip for her, her wife, and her children to Cancun," and one was her friend Rena in Madison, inviting her to come up to stay for the weekend. Jennifarre had been considering the idea, anyway, as she always enjoyed the company of her friends there and had considered moving there several times, if the financial considerations worked out. In any case, this invitation sealed the plan for the weekend, so it was just a matter of working out the details.

Jennifarre walked out of her bedroom and asked Katie, "Any particular reason why I shouldn't go to Madison this weekend?"

Katie said, "Not that I can think of. Why?"

Jennifarre said, "Rena called, asking if I wanted to visit her. Think I might."

Katie said, "Sounds like fun. I'd be inclined to come along, except that I'm already booked up solid for the weekends, and I'm also not quite into some of what her crowd gets into."

Jennifarre replied, "Aw, they're pretty laissez-faire about things - you don't judge them - they don't judge you, you know..."

Katie said, "That's fair. I'll remember that. But anyway, we should get to bed - you've got work tomorrow and I've got an ongoing psychology study in the form of a funeral. I've noticed that you've gotten more interest in it lately, any reason for that?"

"Simple - you've been keeping on bringing it up over the last few months - darned close to obsession - and I've been keeping on putting pieces together - you know I'm going to come to conclusions, sooner or later... " she said with a bit of a grin.
